Nuri Şahin — Biography
Born on September 5, 1988 in Lüdenscheid, Germany, Nuri Şahin is a German-Turkish former international footballer who now works as a head coach. He started out at RSV Meinerzhagen before joining Borussia Dortmund's academy in 2001 at the age of twelve, and as a teenager he set several youth-age records for the club, the Bundesliga and Turkey.
Şahin spent six years at Dortmund, including a loan spell at Feyenoord, and helped the club win the Bundesliga title in 2010-11 before moving to Real Madrid for €10 million in 2011. Unable to break through in Spain, he joined Liverpool on loan in 2012, but that deal was cancelled in January 2013 so he could return to Dortmund on an 18-month loan that was later made permanent. In his second Dortmund spell he reached the 2013 Champions League final, finished runner-up in the league on several occasions, and lifted a German Cup and two German Super Cups. He then moved to Werder Bremen in 2018 and to Antalyaspor in 2020, retiring from playing after two seasons there. Despite being born in Germany, Şahin represented Turkey from under-16 level onward, earning 52 senior caps between his 2005 debut and his 2017 retirement, including an appearance at UEFA Euro 2016.
After hanging up his boots, Şahin moved into coaching, taking charge of Antalyaspor in October 2021. In January 2024 he returned to Borussia Dortmund, first as an assistant and then as head coach, a role that ended in January 2025. He has led İstanbul Başakşehir since September 2025 and, as of summer 2026, continues to guide the club through its European qualifying campaign.
