Niyazi Sel — Biography

Niyazi Sel (12 March 1908 – 23 November 1980) was one of Turkey's most storied footballers and sports administrators. Rising through Fenerbahçe's youth ranks after joining at fifteen in 1923, he spent an uninterrupted decade in the first team from 1928, scoring 79 goals in 216 appearances and helping the club to five Istanbul league titles, three Istanbul Shields and two national championships. He earned his first national-team call-up in the 1931 Balkan Championship match against Bulgaria, went on to win five caps and score once for Turkey, and represented his country at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

After retiring from playing, Sel spent decades on Fenerbahçe's board and served as the club's general team captain; he also sat on Turkish Football Federation committees and, together with Orhan Şeref Apak, helped establish Turkey's youth national teams. A longtime newspaper columnist on football and economics and a member of the Turkish Sports Writers' Association, he later became a football commentator on Istanbul Radio, a role that helped launch the broadcasting career of his close friend Halit Kıvanç.

In recognition of more than fifty years of service to the club, Fenerbahçe honored Sel with a service ring and plaque, and he received one of the gold medals awarded to long-standing members on the club's 60th anniversary. His son, Ali Emre Sel, followed in his footsteps through the Fenerbahçe youth academy.
