Nilüfer Akbal — Biography
Nilüfer Akbal was born in 1967 in the Varto district of Muş province. A vocalist of Kurdish and Zaza descent, she is also known for her Alevi identity and for performing in multiple languages, including Kurmanji, Sorani, Zazaki, Turkish and Persian.
Across a long career, Akbal has carried themes of culture and identity into her music, and in interviews she has shared her views on the difficulties facing the Kurdish music industry and on the broader challenges of cultural progress for a stateless people. With her multilingual repertoire, she has become one of the recognized voices of Kurdish music in Turkey.
