Nihat Bekdik — Biography
Born on 17 March 1902 in Istanbul, Nihat Bekdik joined Galatasaray's first team at the age of fourteen and became one of the club's most identified figures over a long career, earning the nickname "Aslan Nihat" ("Nihat the Lion"). He won six Istanbul League championships with the club, earned 21 caps for the Turkish national team, ten of them as captain, and represented Turkey at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics.
A versatile sportsman, Bekdik also achieved success in rowing, athletics, equestrianism, swimming and sailing alongside football, and briefly served as Galatasaray's head coach in 1929. After retiring from playing in 1936, he went into politics and was elected to parliament in 1957. He died in Istanbul on 21 June 1972.
