Nejat Diyarbakırlı — Biography

Nejat Diyarbakırlı (17 June 1928 – 13 July 2017) was a Turkish art historian, academic, and basketball player. In his youth he played for and captained Fenerbahçe's basketball team, and he is understood to have represented the national squad at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

After his sporting career, Diyarbakırlı moved into academia and became known for his research on early Turkic art, studying the origins of Turkic peoples in the territories of the Soviet Union and China. He is regarded as the first Turkish art historian to travel from Turkey to Central Asia for this kind of research.

He was married to pianist Ayşegül Sarıca and died in Istanbul in 2017.
