Naili Moran — Biography

Born Ali Naili Moran on 4 February 1908 in Istanbul, he was a multi-sport Turkish athlete and sports administrator, and a grandson of Tevfik Pasha, the last grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Educated at Robert College, Moran took up swimming, athletics and basketball in 1923, captaining Turkey's first national swimming and water polo teams. He completed his higher education first at the Balzac Institute of Sport in France and then in physical education at the University of Chicago, and in 1927 he set a Turkish discus-throw record of 35.87 metres that stood for many years.

Regarded as one of the founding figures of Turkish basketball, Moran captained the country's first national basketball team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, earned three national caps, and played 481 basketball matches across Turkey, the United States, Europe and Asia. He was also selected for the national athletics team in 1931 and competed at the Balkan Games. After his playing career he moved into administration, serving two terms as president of the Turkish Athletics Federation, from 1945 to 1957 and again from 1964 to 1968, while also officiating 432 basketball games as a referee, including the final at the 1948 London Olympics as a FIBA official.

Moran died on 14 March 1968 in a car accident near Bolu while travelling from Ankara to Istanbul with his family. His widow founded an athletics foundation in his name, which merged into the Turkish Athletics Federation in 2020, and the annual Naili Moran Athletics Championship has been held in his honour every year since 1969.
