Mustafa Dağıstanlı — Biography

Mustafa Dağıstanlı was born on April 11, 1931, in the village of Söğütpınar near Samsun, Turkey. One of the most accomplished figures in Turkish wrestling history, he became a two-time Olympic champion, winning freestyle gold in the bantamweight division at the 1956 Melbourne Games and in the featherweight division at the 1960 Rome Games.

He also claimed world titles in freestyle wrestling in 1954, 1957 and 1959, and added a Greco-Roman gold medal at the 1955 Mediterranean Games. Across his career he compiled a record of 389 wins and 4 draws in 393 bouts, cementing his place among the greatest wrestlers Turkey has produced.

Dağıstanlı died on September 18, 2022, in Antalya, and a memorial ceremony was later held for him at the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
