Mithat Demirel — Biography

Mithat Demirel was born on 10 May 1978 in Berlin to a family of Turkish descent and became a German professional basketball player. Standing 1.80 m tall, the point guard earned 100 caps for the German national team, winning bronze at the 2002 World Championship and silver at the 2005 European Championship.

Demirel began his club career at Alba Berlin in 1997, spending eight seasons there interrupted by loan spells at Oyak Bursa and Mitteldeutscher BC, and won the German championship five times with the club. He moved to Beşiktaş in 2005, later played for Scafati Basket in Italy, and closed out his career at Erdemirspor. An injury to his right eye in 2008 forced him to retire from playing in 2010.

After retiring as a player, Demirel moved into club management, serving as sporting director of Alba Berlin until 2015 and then as general manager of Darüşşafaka Doğuş in Istanbul until 2018. Since 2026 he has served as vice president of the German Basketball Federation.
