Metin Türel — Biography

İbrahim Metin Türel was born on 13 September 1937 in Istanbul and began his football career as a goalkeeper. He played for Galatasaray before moving on to PTT, İstanbulspor, Vefa and Taksim SK over the course of a long playing career.

After retiring as a player, Türel turned to coaching and led numerous clubs in Turkey, including a spell in charge of the Turkish national team from 1977 to 1978; later in his career he also coached the Saudi Arabia national team. Remembered in Turkish football as a mentor to a generation of coaches, Türel died in Istanbul on 17 November 2018, a loss mourned widely across the Turkish football community, including by Galatasaray and the Turkish Football Federation.
