Merve Büyüksaraç — Biography
Merve Büyüksaraç was born on 13 June 1988 in Ankara. After graduating from TED Ankara College, she studied Industrial Design at Yeditepe University, completing her degree in 2011. In 2006 she won the Miss Turkey pageant organized by Star TV and represented Turkey at that year's Miss World final.
Following her pageant win, she remained a visible media figure, competing on the dance show Buzda Dans in 2007 and joining the celebrity team of Survivor Ünlüler-Gönüllüler, filmed in the Dominican Republic, in 2012. After being eliminated and returning to Turkey, a public dispute with producer Acun Ilıcalı escalated into a lawsuit that was resolved in court in 2019.
Büyüksaraç was also tried in 2016 over a poem she shared that was deemed insulting to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and further cases over her social-media posts followed in 2022 and 2023. She married Gökhan Ciner in 2017, and remains known both as a former beauty queen and as a figure in Turkey's press-freedom debates.
