Mertol Karatay — Biography
Born João Batista Casemiro Marques on 4 March 1975 in Cataguases, Brazil, the midfielder spent the majority of his professional career in Turkey. In 2007 he acquired Turkish citizenship and began playing under the name Mertol Karatay, a switch that drew considerable attention in the Turkish sports press at the time.
Standing 1.75 m tall, he turned out for Süper Lig sides including Konyaspor and Kasımpaşa during his Turkish career. Holding dual Brazilian-Turkish nationality, Karatay is remembered as one of the notable examples of a Brazilian-born player who fully naturalized and built a lasting career in Turkish football.
