Mehmet Topuz — Biography

Mehmet Topuz was born on 7 September 1983 in the Şefaatli district of Yozgat and spent most of his career as a right-sided midfielder, occasionally filling in at right-back. He came through the youth ranks at Kayseri Yolspor before joining Kayseri Erciyesspor in 2000, winning the second-tier title with them in 2004; when the club was renamed Kayserispor and rose to the Süper Lig, he was made team captain in 2007.

Courted by both Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2009, he eventually signed for Fenerbahçe, wearing squad number 66 (Yozgat's licence-plate code) in his first season and then 38 (Kayseri's code) the next; in 2010-11 he featured in every one of the club's league fixtures, an unusually consistent run for the position. After a training-ground altercation in 2016 led to his departure, he retired from playing in April 2017, having earned 17 caps for the Turkey national team and won several Süper Lig, Turkish Cup and Super Cup titles over his career. He married Yaren Topuz in 2019, and the couple had a daughter, Âlâ.
