Mehmet Gümüş — Biography
Mehmet Gümüş, born in 1955 in Fatsa, is a Turkish folk musician and composer. After graduating from the Music Department of the Gazi Education Institute (today's Gazi University Faculty of Music), he began teaching music at a high school in his hometown of Fatsa. Following the military coup of 12 September 1980 he was arrested and spent seven years in prison, before being acquitted of all the charges against him at the Court of Cassation.
After his release he returned to music, releasing his debut album “Gülyangını Ömrümüz” in 1990 and going on to give more than a thousand concerts. He has written around 150 compositions, and in 2016 various artists reinterpreted his work on the tribute album “Mehmet Gümüş Besteleri”. In an interview with birgun.net in early 2026, Gümüş described turning a poem, “Buğday Tanesi”, that he had carried with him for years into a new single — a sign that he continues to compose.
