Mehmet Ali Yalım — Biography
Mehmet Ali Yalım (1 April 1929, Kars – 28 January 1992, Ankara) was a versatile Turkish sportsman and sports journalist who competed in basketball, football and handball. He pursued his athletic career while at the Turkish Military Academy (Harp Okulu), excelling mainly in basketball while also playing as a goalkeeper in football.
Yalım earned 61 caps for the Turkish national basketball team, 24 of them as captain, and represented the country at the 1949, 1951 and 1955 European Basketball Championships, the 1951 Mediterranean Games and the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics. After retiring from competitive sport, he worked as a sports columnist for the newspaper Milliyet and later served as sports director at Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ).
He died on 28 January 1992 after suffering a heart attack at the university where he worked, and was buried at Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara following funeral prayers at Maltepe Mosque.
