Mahzuni Şerif — Biography
Born Şerif Cırık, Âşık Mahzuni Şerif came into the world on 17 November 1940 in a village of the Afşin district of Kahramanmaraş. Rooted in the Alevi tradition, he became known as a folk poet, composer and lyricist who set social and political themes to music played on the saz.
From 1967 onward he released hundreds of records and cassettes and authored several books, establishing himself as one of the most prolific and influential figures in Turkish folk music. He died in Cologne, Germany, on 17 May 2002. Decades later his legacy remains vivid: a stage play based on his life was banned in several provinces in 2026 over stated 'sensitivity' concerns, sparking public debate.
