Kubilay Sönmez — Biography
Kubilay Sönmez is a midfielder born in Kamen, Germany, to a Turkish family. He started in football in Germany and spent a period at Schalke 04 before playing for years at top-flight and lower-league clubs in Turkey. On 26 August 2026 he signed a two-year contract with İstanbulspor.
In Turkey he has worn the shirts of Kayserispor, Erzurumspor (joined in 2017), Adana Demirspor and Hatayspor, parting ways with Hatayspor in August 2020. He transferred from Göztepe to Bursaspor in September 2021; his contract with Bursaspor was terminated in July 2023, and in June 2024 he and Boluspor went separate ways. Şanlıurfaspor is also among the clubs of his career. In January 2026 he said goodbye to Kahramanmaraş İstiklalspor and signed with TFF 1. Lig side Manisa FK, then moved to İstanbulspor in August of the same year.
Although born in Germany, he chose Turkey at international level and served with the Turkey U20 and U21 teams. A 1.83 m midfielder, Sönmez holds both German and Turkish citizenship.
