Kâmil Sönmez — Biography
Kâmil Sönmez was born on 4 March 1947 in the Perşembe district of Ordu, Turkey. After completing his early education in Giresun, he studied opera and voice at the Ankara State Conservatory, laying the foundation for a music career built around the folk songs of Turkey's Black Sea region. Of Georgian descent, he became one of the best-known voices of Karadeniz türküleri.
Alongside his singing career, Sönmez also worked as a film and television actor, appearing in numerous productions including Düşman. He was honored with the title of State Artist in 1998, and he died in Istanbul on 20 December 2012.
