İsmet Hürmüzlü — Biography

İsmet Hürmüzlü (1938, Kirkuk – 19 January 2013, Ankara) was an Iraqi Turkmen actor, screenwriter and director who spent most of his life in Turkey.

In the 1950s he was among the co-founders of the Kirkuk Turkmen Theatre. He later moved to Turkey and entered the Ankara State Conservatory in 1961; after graduating he began working for the Turkish State Theatres. In the 1970s he founded the Çağlar Art Theatre, where he explored experimental stage forms, and in the 1980s he was appointed deputy director-general of the State Theatres.

He was honoured with the Order of Respect of the Almaty Uyghur State Theatre in Kazakhstan and an "Honor Award" from the Sweden House of Culture. On screen he appeared in productions such as Valley of the Wolves: Iraq (2006) and the television series Sıla (2006). He died in Ankara on 19 January 2013 and was buried at Karşıyaka Cemetery.
