İlham Gencer — Biography

Bozkurt İlham Gencer was born on 30 August 1925 in the Bakırköy district of Istanbul and became one of Turkey's pioneering jazz musicians, working as both pianist and singer. As one of the country's first pianist-vocalists ("şantör"), he played a key role in popularizing jazz in Turkey and is also regarded as one of the founders of Turkish-language pop music.

Beyond music, Gencer remained a fixture of Turkish cultural and social life for decades, mentoring artists such as Ajda Pekkan. In 2022 he celebrated a birthday with a special gathering in Bodrum organized by his son Bora Gencer, drawing many figures from the arts world.

He died in Bodrum on 24 May 2023, remembered as one of the defining figures of jazz and popular music history in Turkey.
