Hüsnü Çakırgil — Biography

Hüsnü Çakırgil (born 3 October 1965, Ankara) is a former Turkish basketball player known for his sharp three-point shooting. He began his sporting career playing handball in Adana before being invited, almost by chance, to a basketball practice at age eighteen, quickly earning a spot on the senior roster of the Güney Sanayi club. Standing 1.98 m tall and playing forward, he went on to represent Yenişehir Hortaş and Gaziantep's Beslen club, winning the Balkan Junior Championship with Turkey's youth national team in İzmir in 1986 and helping Beslen capture the Directorate General of Youth and Sports Cup in 1989.

Çakırgil joined Fenerbahçe in 1990, where he was instrumental in the club's first Turkish Basketball League championship and earned a playoff MVP-type award for his performance that season. During his Fenerbahçe spell, which lasted until 1995, the team reached two league finals and won a Presidential Cup and a Directorate General Cup, while Çakırgil also became a fixture of the senior national team, featuring in Turkey's EuroBasket squads of 1993 and 1995. He was transferred to Beşiktaş in 1995 and spent the final two seasons of his playing career there.

After retiring from active play, he took on coaching roles at his last clubs and has also worked in sports journalism.
