Hüner Coşkuner — Biography

Hüner Coşkuner was a Turkish singer who stayed within the classical Turkish music repertoire throughout a career that ran from 1987 to 2021, and her discography holds some twenty albums. Her family roots lie in the Cide district of Kastamonu, and she is counted among the leading women of Turkish art music.

She began her musical training in her high-school years at the Üsküdar Mûsikî Cemiyeti under Emin Ongan, and later drew on teachers such as Melahat Pars, Kamuran Yarkın and Feriha Tunceli to widen her repertoire. Her first album, Doğuş, came out in 1987 on Şahinler Plak. Sakın Dönme Geriye (1989) is regarded as one of her most successful records, and Beni Sevmeni İstiyorum, Gidemezsin, Haydi Tut Ellerimi, Gidiyor (1993) and Olamaz completed that first period. In 1995 she moved to Elenor Müzik and released ten studio albums on that label, among them Klasikler 2 (2000), Geleceksen Gelme Yar (2005) and Yeşilçam Klasikleri (2013). Her last album, Seni Acele Görmem Lazım (2015), consists of songs with her own words and music.

She volunteered with several foundations and associations, the Foundation for Children with Leukemia foremost among them, and donated part of the income from her albums and her poetry book to them. She died on 4 February 2021, aged 57, at the Istanbul hospital where she was being treated for bone marrow cancer, and was buried at Karacaahmet Cemetery after funeral prayers at Şakirin Mosque.
