Hasan Karacadağ — Biography
Jinn entered Turkish cinema as a theme through Hasan Karacadağ, a Turkish director and screenwriter known above all for the Dabbe horror series. The Dabbe films later reached a wider audience through Netflix and came to be regarded as a cult series.
Born in Şanlıurfa, Karacadağ began on the path of medicine: while studying at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara he realised in his third year that a military career did not suit him and went to Japan, where he studied genetic medicine first and then film, completing the cinema directing department of Nippon Eizo-Juku in 1998. His short film Pas won best film at the Tokyo Video Festival and the JVC Film Festival, and he went on to win various awards in Tokyo three years in a row. He directed short films, documentaries, TV films and series in both Turkey and Japan and took part in more than 50 international festivals. In 1999 Hummadruz was shown at the Istanbul International Film Festival and made him known to a wider public.
The real turning point came in 2006 with the first Dabbe, followed by films such as Semum, Dabbe 2, El-Cin, Dabbe 5: Zehr-i Cin and Dabbe 6. He has directed more than twelve films. In 2016 he made Magi with Michael Madsen and Stephen Baldwin in the cast, a film described as his last.
