Halide Pişkin — Biography

Halide Pişkin was born on 16 July 1902 in Shkodër, then part of the Ottoman Empire, and died on 1 November 1959 in Istanbul from kidney failure. After schooling in Istanbul and a brief period working as a teacher, she made her stage debut in 1923 with a theatre troupe in Izmir founded by Şadi Fikret. In 1925 she joined the Darülbedayi company, later performing with the groups of Raşit Rıza, Naşit Özcan and Sadi Tek, and in 1943 she co-founded her own troupe together with İhsan Balkır. She eventually joined the Istanbul City Theatres, where she remained on stage for most of the rest of her career. She became widely known for voicing a comic aunt character in radio sketches. She entered cinema in 1933 and went on to appear in numerous films, including Lüküs Hayat, Annemi Arıyorum, Karanlık Yollar and Kılıbıklar, and she also wrote the screenplay for one of her later films. She is regarded as one of the earliest female stage actresses of Turkey's republican era.
