Güngör Şahinkaya — Biography

Güngör Şahinkaya is a midfielder from the era when Trabzonspor became the first club from Anatolia to win the Turkish championship. After playing he went on to work at the club as a coach and youth-development executive, and he is remembered as a Trabzonspor figure with a large collection of trophies.

Between 1976 and 1986 he wore the Trabzonspor shirt for eleven seasons, one of the most consistent members of the side nicknamed the "Black Sea Storm" that dominated Turkish football for a decade from 1975. In those years he won six Süper Lig titles (1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1980-81, 1983-84), three Turkish Cups (1976-77, 1977-78, 1983-84), five Turkish Super Cups and two Prime Minister's Cups (1977-78, 1984-85). He earned six caps for the national team, debuting in a friendly in which Turkey beat Saudi Arabia 3-0 on 10 March 1980.

After retiring he moved into coaching and led the Turkey U14 national team. At Trabzonspor he served as youth-development coordinator and director, responsible for bringing on young players. His brothers Coşkun and Bülent were also professional footballers who played for Trabzonspor, and he was one of seven children.
