Gülriz Sururi — Biography

Gülriz Sururi (24 July 1929, Istanbul - 31 December 2018, Istanbul) was a Turkish theatre actress, playwright and author, and a graduate of Robert College. She made her stage debut in 1942 in the children's section of the Istanbul City Theatre, later performing with the Muammer Karaca ensemble from 1955 and the Dormen Theatre from 1960, and won the İlhan İskender award for her performance in "Irma la Douce" in 1961.

In 1962 she co-founded the Gülriz Sururi-Engin Cezzar Theatre with her husband, actor Engin Cezzar, and became known for her roles in Kaldırım Serçesi and Keşanlı Ali Destanı. Named best actress multiple times over her career, she was awarded the title of State Artist by the Ministry of Culture in 1998. Besides acting, she also directed productions, presented a television cooking show, and published books of memoir, fiction and short stories; a play she wrote, Cevriye, has continued to be staged years after her death.
