Gökhan Gönül — Biography
Gökhan Gönül was born on 4 January 1985 in Bafra, a district of Samsun in northern Turkey. His family moved to Bursa when he was six, and in 1999 an uncle enrolled him in the youth set-up at Bursayolspor, where he started out as a goalkeeper. He was shifted into defence as more boys joined the club, and began to take the game seriously under the personal coaching of Mehmet Kirazoğlu.
A right back listed at 1.74 m, he made his professional name at Gençlerbirliği before joining Fenerbahçe and later Beşiktaş, becoming for many years one of the Süper Lig's most dependable full backs. He was also a regular for the Turkey national team during this period.
After retiring he moved into coaching, returning in July 2026 to Gençlerbirliği — the club where his career began — as an assistant coach. Turkish media reported that he had been detained in December 2025 as part of an investigation into alleged stock-market manipulation, and that the house-arrest measure against him was lifted in January 2026.
