Genco Gülan — Biography
Genco Gülan (born 13 January 1969, Istanbul) is a Turkish conceptual artist and art theorist. He studied political science and art at Boğaziçi University and earned a master's degree in media studies at The New School in New York. He lives and works in Istanbul.
Working across painting, sculpture, new media, performance and installation, he explores the relationship between society and culture, describing his practice as "idea art". His works have been shown at institutions including the Pera Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, ZKM Karlsruhe, the Triennale di Milano, the Tehran Biennial and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
He founded the Web Biennial and is a founding member of the Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum (iS.CaM). He has received awards from BP, Lions and EMAF and was a finalist for the Sovereign European Art Prize in 2011. He teaches at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Boğaziçi University.
