Galip Tekin — Biography

Born on 20 April 1958 in Konya, Galip Tekin studied at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and rose to prominence as one of the notable artists at Gırgır magazine during the Oğuz Aral era. His comics, which began as humorous, fantastical and absurd tales, gradually moved toward science fiction and away from comedy, and his style has often been compared to that of the French artist Jean "Mœbius" Giraud. After Aral's era at Gırgır ended, Tekin worked for nearly every humor magazine in Turkey and also taught comics courses at universities. Alongside his drawing career, he was for a time a co-owner and operator of Kemancı, one of Taksim's most popular bars.

He was best known for long-running serialized stories such as Alavarza, Delik, Son Neoplan and Tursun'tur, which began appearing in collected album form in 2011. His stories inspired the 2012 television series "Acayip Hikayeler", which was cancelled after the 2012-2013 season. In 2016 he was still drawing for the newly launched comics magazine "Hortlak".

Galip Tekin was found dead at his home in Arnavutköy on 6 July 2017 and was buried at Küçükçekmece Cemetery. He is remembered as one of the leading figures of Turkish fantasy and science-fiction comics.
