Fevzi Zemzem — Biography

Fevzi Zemzem was a striker and later a coach, nicknamed "Buldozer Fevzi" ("Bulldozer Fevzi") for his physical strength and combative play. He was the forward of the Göztepe side that reached the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (forerunner of the UEFA Cup) semifinals in 1968–69 and the Cup Winners' Cup quarterfinals the following season, and Göztepe supporters count him among the club's legends. He died on 21 March 2022, aged 80.

He was spotted by Göztepe officials while playing for the military club Bursa Havagücü during his national service in Bursa, and wore Göztepe's shirt for eleven uninterrupted years. He was the Süper Lig's top scorer in 1967–68 with 19 goals; in 1968–69 he shared the title on 17 goals but asked that Metin Oktay receive the trophy. With Göztepe he won the Turkish Cup in 1968–69 and 1969–70; in the second leg of the 20 May 1970 cup final he scored twice against Eskişehirspor, and he also scored when they beat Fenerbahçe 3–1 in the Super Cup on 28 June 1970. Between 1965 and 1969 he won 18 caps for the Turkey national team, scoring 6 goals, and won the RCD Cup in 1967 and 1969.

In 1977–78 he was assistant to Tekin Yolaç at Göztepe, who won the Second League that season. His biggest success as a manager came at Orduspor, which finished fourth in 1978–79 and took part in European competition for the first time in the club's history the following season. He took Samsunspor up to the First League in 1981–82 and Diyarbakırspor in 1985–86; Tanju Çolak and Dobi Hasan were among his pupils.
