Fevzi Tuncay — Biography

Fevzi Tuncay was born on 14 September 1977 in the Milas district of Muğla province. The goalkeeper began in amateur football with Datça Belediyespor before catching the eye of Muğlaspor, rose as far as the Turkish U-16 national side, and made his professional debut on 15 May 1994. His performances at youth international level led to a move to Beşiktaş in 1995, and he made his first appearance for the club away at Trabzonspor on 17 September 1995.

He became Beşiktaş's first-choice keeper in the 1998-99 season, making thirty-two league appearances that year; the same period saw him face Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League and save a penalty from Gheorghe Hagi in a Turkish Cup final. A mishandled back-pass against Galatasaray in April 2000 became one of the most talked-about moments of his career. After Beşiktaş he went on to play for Gaziantepspor, Samsunspor, several spells at Malatyaspor, Manisaspor, Fethiyespor, Diyarbakırspor, Kocaelispor and Giresunspor, helping Diyarbakırspor win promotion to the Süper Lig.

Tuncay was part of Turkey's squad at Euro 2000, later worked as a coach after retiring, and in 2024 became the subject of a documentary about his life called Iska.
