Faruk Ilgaz — Biography
Ahmet Faruk Ilgaz was born on 22 January 1922 in Kadıköy, the son of İsmail Tevfik Bey and Fatma Aliye Hanım. He graduated from the Saint Joseph French High School in 1939 and from Istanbul Technical University's civil engineering department in 1944, having played for Fenerbahçe's youth team for a time while still a student.
Ilgaz joined the Fenerbahçe SK board in 1956 and led the club as chairman for two long spells, 1966-1974 and 1976-1980, and again in 1983-1984, thirteen seasons in total; under his leadership in 1966-67 the club won five trophies in a single season, including the league title. Elected to Istanbul's municipal government on the Justice Party's ticket in 1967, he served roughly three months as acting mayor the following year after the death in office of Haşim İşcan. Ilgaz died of kidney failure in Istanbul on 16 July 2014; a Fenerbahçe facility on Fenerbahçe Island had already been named after him in 2004.
