Doğan Andaç — Biography

Doğan Andaç moved from the army into coaching and football administration. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, led the Turkish Army team to the world title at the World Military Football Championship in 1966, took charge of the senior national team several times as a caretaker, and in 1980 served for a month as acting president of the Turkish Football Federation. He died on 6 February 2013.

In the army he took part in international competitions in athletics and basketball before turning to coaching. In 1963 he was put in charge of the Army national team, which finished second in 1964 and 1965, won the 1966 title after beating the Netherlands 5-0 in the semi-final, and kept it in 1967. With the under-21 side he won a bronze medal at the 1971 Mediterranean Games. In charge of the senior national team he oversaw the 2-1 win over Albania in EURO 1972 qualifying and a 1-1 draw with East Germany in World Cup qualifying in 1976.

At club level he took Denizli Karagücü to the quarter-finals of the 1965-66 Turkish Cup. He led Diyarbakırspor to ninth place in the top flight in 1977-78, coached Beşiktaş for a season in 1978, and in 1982-83 won the second division with Denizlispor to take them up to the First League. At the federation he became head of the Education Department after his time as acting president, and sat on the board intermittently in the 1980s and 1990s. He is credited with helping later coaches such as Fatih Terim, and in 2004 received an honorary award from the Turkish Football Men's Association.
