Dilber Ay — Biography

Dilber Ay (born Dilber Bağbuş, also known as Dilber Karakaş) was born in 1956 in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş and became known as a Turkish folk and arabesk singer. Recognized for performing Barak folk songs, she reached a wide audience with her 1981 song "Meyrik" and the Adıyaman folk song known as "Tavukları Pişirmişem".

Between 2011 and 2015 she hosted the television program "Kadere Mahkûmlar", in which she performed arabesk songs from a studio set designed to resemble a prison. After she began appearing as a guest on mainstream television from 2012 onward, she became a well-known pop-culture figure, remembered for her tough, confident and unconventional image. She also appeared in a handful of films, most notably Beynelmilel (2006).

Dilber Ay died on 29 April 2019 in Ankara. Her life story was later dramatized in the 2021 biographical film "Dilberay".
