Deniz Doğan — Biography
Deniz Doğan is a German-Turkish defender who made his name with Eintracht Braunschweig and was part of the club's climb from the 3. Liga to the Bundesliga. He ended his professional career in 2015, then stayed on with Braunschweig's reserve side as both player and assistant coach. He holds Turkish and German citizenship and stands 1.83 m tall.
He started out in the amateur clubs of Lübeck, TSV Siems and 1. FC Phönix Lübeck. In 1999 he moved to Eichholzer SV, and his form in the fourth tier took him to Hamburger SV II, where he was among the most-used players in a title-winning side that rose to the Regionalliga. He then joined VfL Osnabrück, newly promoted to the 2. Bundesliga, but saw little action there and the club were relegated at the end of the season. In 2004-05 he returned to his home-town club VfB Lübeck, stayed until 2007 and became a fixture, part of the squad that knocked TSV 1860 München out of the German Cup.
His defining spell began with the move to Braunschweig in 2007. Over eight seasons he wore the number 8, won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga as 3. Liga champions in 2011 and to the Bundesliga as runners-up in 2013. On 10 August 2013 he made his Bundesliga debut against Werder Bremen and went on to play 23 matches that season, most of them as captain, though the team went down again. His brother Hüseyin Doğan also played as a defender, for SV Meppen.
