Defne Joy Foster — Biography
Born in 1975 at İncirlik in Adana to a Turkish mother and an American father who served as a NATO officer, Defne Joy Foster finished secondary school in İzmir and did not go on to university. She entered television in 1996 as an on-screen face for a music channel and became one of the era's recognizable VJs before moving into hosting music and game shows on several channels.
Alongside presenting, she also took up acting, appearing in small parts in a handful of series before becoming widely known for playing Eda in Sihirli Annem. Later in her career she took on roles in other series and appeared as a contestant on a televised dance competition. In her personal life she married and had one child.
Foster died in early 2011 at a friend's home in Istanbul; an autopsy attributed her death to cardiac arrest linked to asthma combined with alcohol and medication. The investigation into the circumstances was reopened more than once in later years, and the friend who had been present was given a suspended sentence over the delay in calling for help. In 2026 renewed remarks from her mother brought the case back into public discussion.
