Cengiz Mustafayev — Biography
Born on August 29, 1960, in Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan Oblast, USSR, Çingiz Fuad oğlu Mustafayev had a medical degree and no formal training in journalism, yet became known as an independent Azerbaijani journalist who documented the early stages of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Reports from the "215 kl" studio he founded carried footage of Azerbaijan, then under an information blockade, to leading US and European news agencies.
His filmed record of the Khojaly Massacre drew intense international attention and severely damaged Armenia's reputation abroad. Mustafayev was killed on June 15, 1992, in the village of Nakhchivanik in the Aghdam district, struck by mortar shrapnel while filming. A brother of fellow journalists Vahid and Seyfulla Mustafayev, he was posthumously named National Hero of Azerbaijan and awarded the Order of the Red Star.
