Celal Esat Arseven — Biography
Born Mehmet Celâlettin in 1876 in Istanbul and educated at Galatasaray High School, Celal Esat Arseven — son of Ahmed Esad Pasha — was a versatile early-Republican intellectual who worked as a painter, writer and politician while also publishing on art and architectural history.
He is regarded as one of the first scholars to introduce art history, architectural history and urban planning as academic disciplines in Turkey, and he championed the idea of a distinct "Turkish art," helping the concept gain acceptance among his contemporaries. His best-known work is the five-volume Encyclopedia of Art. He was also involved in early Turkish cinema, credited as screenwriter and director on the 1918 film Alemdar Mustafa Pasa.
In politics, he served in the Turkish parliament as a deputy for Istanbul in the 7th term and for Giresun in the 8th term. He died in Istanbul on 13 November 1971.
