Burak Karan — Biography

Burak Karan was born on 11 September 1987 in Wuppertal, Germany, to a family of Turkish descent. He played as a defender or midfielder for the reserve side of Alemannia Aachen before stepping away from professional football.

In 2013 he travelled to Syria, where he was reported to have joined armed opposition ranks fighting against the government during the civil war. German and Turkish media described him as having become linked to jihadist circles, and he was reported killed in the town of Azaz on 11 October 2013; his father disputed how German press had portrayed the events.
