Arman — Biography

Born Aramais (Armais) Vartani Hovsepian in Tabriz on 21 February 1921, this ethnic-Armenian performer from Iran became known professionally as Arman. He died on 8 August 1980 in Barcelona, Spain. He made his film debut in 1953 in Return, the first feature directed by Samuel Khachikian, and went on to work repeatedly with Khachikian on titles including Crossroad of Events, Blood and Honor, Storm in Our Town and Anxiety. He also acted for director Aramais Aghamalian in The Humans and appeared in films directed by Esmail Riahi. From 1965 he moved into directing and producing as well, starting with The Bride of the Sea, and ultimately directed and produced five films of his own. His performance in Crossroad of Events won him the best actor prize at Iran's first national film festival. Over roughly a quarter-century career he appeared in more than fifty films. His son, Lorik Minassian, also became known in the arts.
