Ali Sami Yen — Biography
Ali Sami Yen (20 May 1886 – 29 July 1951), born Ali Sami Frashëri, was a Turkish footballer, coach, and sports official best known as the founder of Galatasaray Sports Club. The son of the noted Albanian-Ottoman writer and lexicographer Şemseddin Sami (Sami Frashëri), he was educated at Galatasaray High School before turning to sport.
He founded Galatasaray in 1905, served as the club's first coach between 1905 and 1908, and was its president from 1905 to 1918 and again briefly in 1925. He later headed Turkey's National Olympic Committee from 1926 to 1931 and became the first coach to lead the national team in an international match, against Romania.
Ali Sami Yen died in Istanbul in 1951 and was buried at Feriköy Cemetery. In recognition of his role as founder and first president of the club, Galatasaray's longtime stadium was named after him in 1964.
