Ahmet Ümit — Biography
Ahmet Ümit (born 30 September 1960 in Gaziantep) is one of Turkey's most widely read crime novelists. He is also known as a poet, short-story writer and screenwriter, and Bulgarian sources add literary critic. He studied at Marmara University.
According to the Spanish Wikipedia he became politically active at fourteen, belonged to the then-illegal Communist Party of Turkey until twenty-nine, and studied at Moscow's Academy of Social Sciences in 1985-86. Alongside his detective fiction he has published poetry, many short stories and a fairy tale, plus essays on Kafka, Dostoevsky, Patricia Highsmith and Poe. Patasana (2002) appeared in Spanish as "La tumba negra" in 2008.
His work has repeatedly moved to the screen: Sis ve Gece was filmed in 2007, and in spring 2026 Turkish media reported that İstanbul Hatırası would become a television series and that shooting had begun on one drawn from his Chief Inspector Nevzat books. In the same period he hinted at a new detective novel and voiced support for jailed journalists.
